Contests

 

Horse Project Meeting General Outline

Contests - Hippology, Horse Bowl, and Horse Judging
  • Oct. - March, Study sessions are Fridays evenings. Study breaks over the holidays. Some Saturdays are possible for Horse Judging at local horse farms with some cost involved. See the calendar for scheduled dates.
     
  • Contest are sometimes require an overnight stay. Every member pays their own way, hotel, food, gas, entry fee, etc.

Shows, Field Trips, Clinics, etc.
April - Sept. at various Northern VA places. Usually a cost involved.  See the District Horse for District Shows and Clinics and State show information. See State Horse for more District and State activities. See our calendar for field trips, trail rides, and guest speakers. And camp information.

 

HORSE PROJECT REQUIREMENTS

  • $15 class fee and all membership enrollment papers due at first meeting
  • $$Pay as you go$$  on other expenses, entries, books, study materials, horse polo shirts (approx. $15), horse jackets (approx. $55), transportation, hotels, food, gas, field trips, guest speakers expenses, etc.
  • Must be committed to regular project meeting attendance and attendance at Monthly General Club meetings
  • Must be committed to obtaining all materials needed and have an organized horse project book (see order below). Must bring project book/horse records to every meeting.
  • Must be committed to studying per the outline and be prepared for contests.
  • Must be committed to keeping horse records (if you have a horse) and continuously working on your project manuals and worksheets, asking for signatures as you progress.
  • Must turn in all required paperwork, horse declarations and show entries ON TIME.
  • Must be timely to meetings and field trips.
  • All 4-Hers and their parents must have a positive and supporting attitude with fellow club members and complete respect and gratitude for the volunteer coaches, guest speakers and other volunteers.
  • A Mandatory Meeting is held in early July 2009 for those attending the state horse show. You must bring the following: Project book, Entry Fee or Horse Show Hero, Your Birth Certificate, Measurement card, Health History Form, Class selection, Entry form - with leader signature, Rule book, Entries are due to the state office generally the 2nd week in July.

About the Horse Leaders

Sandy Arnold, B.S. Equine Science
Sandy has been in the horse business for 35+ years and comes with a background of western, hunter, driving, eventing and dressage background. She has a degree in horse science and has worked on and off in the field between running her web development business and raising a family.  She has had a lifetime of experience with both training, competing, and teaching professionally and at the college level. In her youth she was competitively involved in the Kansas State 4-H horse project program through the state level, was an active state horse council youth representative and on the state horse judging team, competing at Nationals as well. She currently trains, instructs and competes in all disciplines and trains and sells her own string of ponies.

Amy Owsenek, certified by horse slobber, sweat, and Indians
Amy has been involved with horses for over 30 years. My horse experiences span the range of horse disciplines from western riding, cutting, ranching, to hunt seat equitation, hunter/jumpers, vaulting, dressage, combined training, and hunter paces. I have been teaching on and off since I was 16 years old. I was involved with the 4-H horse program through my senior year in high school and received a 4-H scholarship for college where I studied riding and teaching riding as my main extracurricular activity. I hold an IHSA National Championship in Hunt Seat Equitation, and have earned many vaulting championships. I am a certified vaulting coach.

Jan. 9, 2010 Gloucester Co. Hippology Contest report: Congratulations to Marie for placing 6th, Libby for placing 7th, Ivy for placing 11th and Haley for placing 12th out of 35 entries in the Jr. Division.
Feb. 13, 2010 NE District Hippology and Horse Bowl Contest report: Congratulations to Marie for placing 5th and Libby placing 7th overall Jr. Division out of 64 contestants. And congratulations to Kate and Haley for placing 4th on the Jr. Team Question. Congratulations to the team of Libby, Anya, Marie and Jessie for placing 7th in Horse Bowl and congratulations to Haley for placing 5th in Horse Bowl scrambling with Orange Co. Congratulations to Devynn for placing 5th on a Horse Bowl team scrambling with Fluvanna and participating with them for the Hippology Sr. Division.

2009

Jan. 10, 2009 Gloucester Co. Hippology Contest report: Congratulations to Libby, Anya and Jessie for placing 1st in Jr. Team Questions and Marie, Ivy and Haley for placing 2nd in Jr. Team Questions. Libby placed 1st overall and Anya placed 3rd overall for Jr. Individual Hippology. Haley placed 3rd overall and Marie placed 4th overall in Intermediate Jrs. Paige placed 2nd in Sr. Team Questions with her scramble teammates from another club. All were awarded Danish ribbons as well.
Feb. 7, 2009 ND Hippology Contest report: Congratulations to Anya for a 10th place individual in stations, Marie for a 7th place individual in stations and Libby for a 4th place individual in stations, Libby for a 10th place in the written, Paige won a 6th place for Team Questions w/Fluvanna. 4th place for Team Stations was awarded to Libby, Anya, Jessie and Julia and Paige won 6th place w/Fluvanna for Team Stations. Paige won a 9th place for horse judging individual, and her team won 1st place for the Team Judging. Libby, Anya, Julia and Jessie won 1st place for the Team Question and Libby won 9th place overall for Jr. division.  Paige won a 4th place overall Sr. Division. Jr. Team of Libby, Julia, Jessie and Anya won 7th place overall for Jr. Division and Jr. Team of Marie, Haley and Maddy won 10th place overall for Jr. Division. There were 16 teams in the contest.
Feb. 20, 21 2009 B&B Hippology and Horse Judging Contest report: Congratulations to Julia B. for 7th place in Hippology for Jr. ID and Judging division, and the team of Libby, Ivy and Julia place 5th overall for Jr. Team ID & Judging. For the horse judging day, Ivy S. placed 1st in the Jr. Performance division and 9th in the Halter division and 3rd overall Jr. division. Haley B. placed 7th overall in the Jr. Performance division. The team of Marie, Haley and Maddy placed 3rd overall in the Jr. Performance team division, and the team of Julia, Ivy and Libby placed 5th overall in the Jr. Performance team division. The team of Ivy, Libby and Julia placed 4th in the contest as Overall Team and the team of Marie, Haley and Maddy placed 7th overall team. There were 18 Jr. teams in the contest.
Feb. 28, 2009 - District Horse Bowl Contest report: Congratulations to Marie, Haley, Maddy, Jessie and Libby for placing 2nd in the Junior division of Horse Bowl. Jessie won 4th place overall individual and Haley won 7th place overall individual! There were 6 teams competing. They are now qualified for the State Contests.
March 14, 2009 - District Horse Judging Contest: Congratulations to Libby, Anya and Julia for winning 5th place overall team at the contest. They also won 4th place team in the halter division and 5th place team in the performance division. Libby won 8th place overall individual and 9th place in the individual placings for halter. Julia and Anya earned a red danish ribbon for reasons and Libby earned a blue danish ribbon for reasons.

2008 News

Congratulations to our outstanding teams at the 2008 Northern District Hippology Contest! Great job on reasons to all! Allison got 1st and Paige got 2nd in the individual horse judging division of the Hippology Contest, earning their team (including Stephanie and Marie) a 7th overall at a contest that had approximately 100 juniors in their division! The same team also earned a 7th place overall for the Horse Judging contest (their first ever competition!)

Congratulations to Libby, Anya, Stephanie and Marie for their 5th place at the Northern Dist. Horse Bowl Contest (Jr. Div.) and to Paige and Cassie (Sr. Div.) for their 2nd placing!

Congratulations to Paige, Julia, Libby, and Cassie for many wins at the Northern District Horse Shows! And congratulations to our State competitors, Paige and Cassie! Paige placed 4th in Jr. Western Showmanship, 5th and 6th place in Jr. Western Pleasure (2 rounds), 7th place in Jr. Working Western, 3rd place in Western Side Saddle and 7th place in her first ever Drill Team competition. Cassie placed 10th in Sr. Western Equitation, 9th in Sr. Western Pleasure, and 10th in Sr. Horsemanship.

Outside of 4-H, Congratulations to Julia for placing 1st in VHSA Finals 2008 for Equitation and 2nd in Hunter Under Saddle and earning Res. Champion for the year in Short Stirrup 9 and under. Congratulations to Marie for earning two 4th placings at VHSA Finals 2008 in equitation and over fences classes in the Short Stirrup age 10-12.

Nokesville 4-H Horse Jacket Order Information:
Order on an individual basis through EmbroidMe in Manassas, VA near the Burlington Coat Factory. Jackets are called "Survivor", adult style# 8600 and youth style# 8500. Prices are between $52 and $60 plus tax. You might try on one of our members jackets to see what size best suits you. Talk to Bonny at 703-366-3077

Scholarship Information

  • Offered by the VA State Fair - click on link.
     

  • County Portfolio Scholarship Requirements:
    - must turn in a completed portfolio
    - must be an active member in the horse project
    - must use scholarship money toward a horse project educational camp or contest

 
Southern Regionals Qualifications:
Held late July, early Aug. VA is allowed 42 horse/rider pairs. In February, a pre-application form is available. Anyone that is interested can apply and pay a 40.00 pre-application fee. Applicants are ranked based on their performance at previous year's State 4-H Horse Show. The highest ranks from the show are selected first and will then there will be a wait list. Upon a scratch the next high ranking individual on the list will be selected. Fees for SR entry are based on the states costs, generally $55 – $60 per stall and $20 per class. Most youth enter approximately 3 - 5 classes as they are not limited to a division. Below is basic information:

ELIGIBILITY
Virginia members who participate in the 2010 Southern Regional Championship must be currently enrolled in 4-H in Virginia and not have had their 19th birthday prior to January 1.

4-H MEMBERS SHOWING HORSES
Virginia is allowed to enter 42 horses or ponies. Members qualify by having previously participated in the State 4-H Horse Show. Each may enter one animal only and eligibility is the joint responsibility of the State horse specialist, exhibitor, leader and finally the respective extension agent. Horse entries must obtain and comply with any health requirements for the particular host state (individual responsibility).

SELECTION OF ENTRIES
The horse and rider qualified at the 2009 State 4-H Horse Show.

Order of Selection will be:

1. Division Champions
2. Class Champions
3. Class Winners
4. Reserves
5. Seconds
6. Thirds
7. Fourths
8. Fifths
9. Sixths
10. Sevenths
11. Eighths
12. Ninths
13. Tenths
14. After top ten, entry is open on first come first serve basis and based on postmark of pre-entry if the 42 slots have not been filled.

**Where placing is considered, 4-Hers are also ranked by class size.

SUBSTITUTION for the horse ridden in the State 4-H Horse Show may be done by exhibiting the substituted horse in the current year District Qualifying Show or clinic. Therefore, members show at the 2010 Southern Regional Championship with a horse they exhibited at the 2009 State 4-H Horse Show or a horse they exhibited at a 2010 District Qualifying Show or clinic. No other substitutions will be allowed.
