This is a reminder that the GoKart project will meet Feb. 27th at 3pm at the Prince William County Fairgrounds Childrens' Barn.

Bring all of the materials you have gathered and any tools/equipment you may be planning to take. If you have not yet gathered any materials or come up with a plan yet, and still want to participate, please come anyway. Many in the group have gathered more engines than they need and can share and you can get some ideas by seeing what the others are planning to do.

Please let me know if you are planning to attend. Some I have already heard from.

Thanks!

Thanks to those of you who were able to make it to the planning meeting last Sunday. We hope that you were able to get your creative juices flowing and are exciting about beginning  this new project! For those of you who weren't able to be here, and to recap the basics of the meeting, here is where we stand right now:

You should be deciding on what type of kart you want to build. (Weblinks to various models can be found at the end of this email).

Begin looking for parts-particularly used parts from neighbors, family, etc. Basics to get started include:

1. Engine (Mr. Brennan has found directions on converting vertical shaft lawn mower engines to drive the horizontal shafts on the kart, so those are a possibility now too!)

2. Body frame or material to build (wooden or metal).

3. Gas tank (if using gas powered engine)

4. Steering Wheel

5. Tires

6. Seat

7. Cables ( for throttle and brakes- can possibly be  from old bicycles)

Resources for new parts:

Northern Tool

J.C. Whitney

Harbor Freight

Please bring assorted tools, clamps, electrical tape, workbenches, etc. We will have exclusive access to the building for the duration of our project. You are welcome to bring equipment and leave it in the building if you are comfortable with doing so. Please label all of your tools and equipment. Be sure to have protective eyeware for all those working with engine parts.

There are lots of ideas on line. We are hoping to work with simple designs that will allow the kids to do the majority of the work with assistance from adults keeping our goal on the 4-H philosophy of  "Learning by Doing". We want them to feel proud of their product!
