4-H DAY AT THE STATE CAPITOL

Tuesday, February 17, 2010

WHAT:

Visit the State Capitol in Richmond. Tour the House and Senate floors. Visit with our elected officials and learn about government in action.

Tour the Virginia Supreme Court Tour scheduled for 11:30 AM. http://www.courts.state.va.us/

We will sit in the main courtroom and have a guide tell us about the court.

Tour Maymont Nature Center, Richmond VA in Afternoon - There are 13 aquarium tanks in the center that mimic the fall line of the James River. These tanks range in size from 300 to 6,500 gallons and contain everything from native fish to turtles to river otters. Other animals on exhibit in the center include owls, flying squirrels, snakes, and lizards. There are also exhibits on geology, fish ladders and many more Examples of other things to see are the outdoor wildlife exhibits, Italian and Japanese gardens, and the children’s farm.

WHO: 4-H members age 9 and older may attend. Adult volunteers are needed as chaperones. We must have one adult accompanying every five children. We have bus space for 45 persons, adult numbers may be limited. Non-4-Hers may attend this trip if space is available.

WHEN: Tuesday, February 17, 2010. Bus will depart from the Cooperative Extension Office in Manassas at 6:15 A.M. We will also make an eastern end of the county pick-up at the Cracker Barrel parking lot in Dumfries on Rt. 234 near Rt. 1. Bus returns at approximately 6:00 PM in Manassas.

COST: $30.00 (This is for bus transportation, $2 nature center admission, videos and snacks on the bus) The cost of the bus has risen again (cost of bus is $1,000.00). We must fill the bus to come even close to breaking even, so please consider joining us.

LUNCH: Bring a bag lunch to eat on the bus before we go to Maymont. The bus company asks we bring food, which is not sticky and drinks with screw-on tops. There can be no gum chewing on the bus.

REGISTER: Registration Deadline is January 29, 2010. Registrations will be accepted by mail or in person. Note: The bus fills quickly! Make check payable to "Prince William 4-H". To Obtain a Letter for an Excused Absence:

If requested, we will provide a letter to school principals detailing the educational nature of this activity and request an excused absence for students. The decision to grant an excused absence

is the responsibility of the principal, not the 4-H program. Please provide the name and address or e-mail address of the school principal by January 21st , so we may issue a letter. Contact Linda King for this at lking@pwcgov.org

Dress for the Event

Please dress appropriately for the occasion. Skirts, dresses or slacks are appropriate for girls, and a shirt and pants (a tie would be nice) for boys. No jeans or sweats. Wear comfortable shoes – we will do a lot of walking! Remember, you will be meeting adults in a working environment. Dress to present yourself well.

Security Checks at the Capitol

Due to more extensive security checks at the Capitol, children and adults are asked to leave all bags and backpacks on the bus.

Tentative Schedule for the Day

6:15 am Leave Manassas Extension Office

7:00 am Pick up at Cracker Barrel, Dumfries

9:00 am Arrive in Richmond

9:30 am Meet the legislators

10:30 am Tour the Senate and House floors

11:30 am Tour Supreme Court of Virginia

12:30 pm Lunch

12:45 pm Drive to Maymont Park

1:30 pm Maymont Park , Tour Grounds and Nature Center

3:30 pm Depart for home!

5:30 pm Approximate arrival time at Cracker Barrel, Dumfries

6:00 pm Approximate arrival time at Extension Office
